Fan violence stops Brazilian football league game




Supporters from Atletico Paranaense and Vasco da Gama charged against each other and it took several moments for police to take control of the situation in the southern city of Joinville. Groups of fans punched and kicked each other several times until police arrived and fired rubber bullets to clear the crowd. Doctors said three other fans were hospitalized but none of their injuries were life-threatening. The man airlifted from the pitch had a serious head injury but his life also wasn't at risk, according to information released by the Hospital Sao Jose

Criminals, not heroes


Ronnie Biggs, a member of the notorious gang that committed the Great Train Robbery 50 years ago, has died at the age of 84. Some are portraying him as a heroic villain who grabbed the equivalent of more than £40 million in today’s money from the Glasgow to Euston mail train, and who escaped from prison to live a life on the run in exotic locations.

Brazil is expected to authorize around 1,500 new domestic flights, expanding travel options between cities hosting World Cup games in June and July giving tourists a reprieve from soaring prices.Brazil’s domestic aviation industry, the third-largest in the world, has come under intense scrutiny as one of the biggest potential embarrassments of the tournament. With a dozen host cities scattered around the vast country, millions of fans are expected to stream from one overcrowded airport to the next during the month-long event.

Gang gunfights loom over Rio de Janeiro's World Cup preparations



Security forces dispatched reinforcements to Rio de Janeiro’s biggest favela over Christmas in a bid to contain an outbreak of violence that threatens to derail the city’s pacification campaign ahead of the 2014 World Cup.Extra police were drafted in to Rocinha, one of Latin America's most notorious favelas, after an officer and a resident were injured on Christmas Day amid ongoing gun fights with drug traffickers that have intensified in recent weeks.

Battle of the Amazon: Troops dispatched after attack on tribal reserve


The body of the Tenharim leader tribe has been found dead. It is now turning into a huge conflict. On Saturday, Brazilian security forces marched into the Tenharim’s reserve in an effort to end the violence, which has seen hundreds of residents from the nearby town of Humaitá invade the community, burning homes and forcing tribe members to flee.

Anger as Brazil prison beheadings video surfaces



A prison in northeaster Brazil where about 60 people were killed. The high commissioner is concerned about the state of prisons in Brazil. The violence in the jail was highlighted when a gruesome video purporting to show the decapitated bodies of three inmates was posted on the website of the Folha d S. Paulo newspaper. It said inmates recorded the images on December 17.
